Why Recycled Sterling Silver?
Why do we use recycled sterling silver at On the Wire Jewellery?
As a sustainability-focussed brand, the materials we use are really important to us. With an abundance of metal already in existence, it is imperative to use what we already have on this planet. Making something old into something new!
Silver Mining
Silver mining is a really important topic, and something we are still learning about as the years go on. It not only causes destruction to the planet, but the job can entail dangerous working conditions for miners. It only makes sense to go for a more environmentally friendly option.
Eco silver
Eco silver, or recycled silver, is only the start of our aim to be more sustainable every day at On the Wire Jewellery. By collecting every scrap and off-cut of silver (even silver dust!), we re-use every bit of metal from our making process.
The Future of Sustainability at On the Wire Jewellery
The big dream for On the Wire Jewellery is to one day collect old and unused sterling silver jewellery, melting it down to make into new pieces of handmade jewellery.
For now, whilst we are still a relatively young business, we purchase our recycled sterling silver from a UK-based 'Responsible Jewellery Council' member company, and have hopes that in the future we will be able to invest in Fair Mined metals. Silver and gold with this title is responsibly mined from small-scale organisations who meet ethical practices set by the 'Fairmined' initiative.
